A GHG inventory tells you where your emissions come from and is the starting point for BRSR Core, customer disclosures, net-zero targets and participation in the Indian Carbon Market. We build your Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory under the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1, prepare it for third-party verification and advise on carbon credit opportunities — both under the compliance mechanism of the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023 and in voluntary markets.
Legal basis: GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and Scope 3 Standard; ISO 14064-1:2018; Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023 notified under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 (as amended in 2022), with GHG emission-intensity targets notified for obligated entities in designated sectors; SEBI BRSR Core GHG disclosures
Who needs it
- Listed companies reporting Scope 1 and 2 (and material Scope 3) emissions in the BRSR and BRSR Core
- Obligated entities under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme in designated sectors such as aluminium, cement, chlor-alkali, fertiliser, iron and steel, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, refineries and textiles
- Suppliers asked for product or corporate carbon footprints by global customers, or facing the EU CBAM reporting requirements for steel, aluminium, cement, fertiliser exports
- Companies with renewable energy, energy-efficiency, waste-to-energy or afforestation projects seeking to register carbon credits
- Businesses setting science-based or net-zero targets that need a credible baseline year
- Real-estate developers and green-building applicants that need embodied and operational carbon estimates

How we get it done
- 1
Boundary and base year
Week 1We fix the organisational and operational boundary (equity share or control approach), select the base year and screen all 15 Scope 3 categories for relevance.
- 2
Data collection and emission factors
Week 1–3Activity data is collected through our templates and matched with appropriate emission factors — CEA grid factor for Indian electricity, IPCC and India-specific factors for fuels, and DEFRA / ecoinvent where needed.
- 3
Inventory calculation and quality control
Week 3–4The inventory is computed with documented methodology, uncertainty assessment and recalculation policy, and reviewed internally for completeness and consistency.
- 4
Verification support and reporting
Week 4–6We prepare the inventory report and evidence files for ISO 14064-3 verification or BRSR Core assurance, and present hotspots and reduction opportunities to management.
- 5
Carbon market strategy
Week 6–8For obligated entities we model the position against notified intensity targets and the resulting Carbon Credit Certificate surplus or shortfall; for others we assess eligibility and economics of registering offset projects.
If you don’t comply
Obligated entities under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme that fail to meet their notified GHG emission-intensity targets must purchase Carbon Credit Certificates to cover the shortfall or face an environmental compensation penalty under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, as prescribed by the Central Government. For other companies, an unverifiable or missing footprint undermines BRSR Core assurance, CBAM declarations and customer disclosures, and exposes the company to allegations of greenwashing under the ASCI guidelines and the CCPA's 2024 greenwashing guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources you own or control — fuel burned in boilers, furnaces, generators and company vehicles, process emissions and refrigerant leaks. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling. Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions in your value chain across 15 categories, from purchased materials and logistics to the use and disposal of your products, and is usually the largest share.
How does the Indian Carbon Market work?
The Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023 creates a compliance mechanism in which obligated entities in notified sectors receive GHG emission-intensity targets; those that beat their targets earn Carbon Credit Certificates and those that fall short must buy them, with trading on registered power exchanges. An offset mechanism allows non-obligated entities to register eligible projects and earn credits. BEE administers the scheme, the Grid Controller of India acts as registry and CERC regulates trading.
What happened to PAT and ESCerts?
The Perform, Achieve and Trade scheme for designated consumers continues for ongoing cycles, but the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022 created the framework to transition it into the carbon market. Energy Saving Certificates from completed PAT cycles are being transitioned into Carbon Credit Certificates according to BEE's notified procedure, so companies with ESCert balances should plan their strategy now.
Can we sell carbon credits from our solar plant or energy-efficiency project?
Possibly. Under the offset mechanism, projects in approved methodologies — renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, waste management and others — can be registered to earn credits, subject to additionality and monitoring requirements. Voluntary registries such as Verra and Gold Standard remain an option for international buyers. We assess eligibility, estimated credit volumes, registration costs and realistic prices before you commit.
Which emission factor should we use for grid electricity?
For location-based Scope 2 in India, the Central Electricity Authority's CO2 Baseline Database provides the official grid emission factor, updated annually. If you buy renewable power through open access or hold Renewable Energy Certificates or green tariffs, we also compute a market-based Scope 2 figure as required by the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.
