Validity
Annual — Form V for the financial year ending 31 March is due by 30 September

An environmental audit checks how your plant actually performs against its consent conditions, the Environment (Protection) Rules and the waste rules — pollution loads, monitoring, record-keeping, waste manifests and statutory returns. We audit the site, benchmark against the law and your consents, and produce a prioritised action plan plus the annual Environmental Statement in Form V that every consented unit must file by 30 September.

Legal basis: Rule 14 of the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986 (Environmental Statement in Form V); consent conditions under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981; Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016; ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 19011 audit practice

Who needs it

  • Every industry, operation or process holding a Consent to Operate or hazardous waste authorization, which must file the Environmental Statement annually
  • Plants approaching consent renewal that want to fix non-compliances before the SPCB inspection
  • Units that have received show-cause notices, directions under Section 33A / 31A or closure threats
  • Management teams that want an independent view of EHS performance across multiple plants
  • Companies implementing or maintaining ISO 14001 that need periodic compliance evaluation
  • Pharma, chemical and dyeing units with effluent treatment, hazardous waste and OCEMS obligations

How we get it done

  1. 1

    Document review and legal register

    Week 1

We study your consents, authorizations and applicable rules to build a site-specific compliance checklist before visiting.

  2. 2

    Site audit

    Week 1–2

Our auditors walk the plant — process areas, ETP, stacks, storage yards, hazardous waste shed, drains and monitoring points — interview staff and verify records against physical conditions.

  3. 3

    Data analysis and gap report

    Week 2–3

Monitoring data is analysed against consent limits and standards; every non-compliance is rated by severity with a root cause and a recommended corrective action, owner and timeline.

  4. 4

    Form V preparation and filing

    Week 3–4

We compile the Environmental Statement in Form V from the audited data, review it with management and file it on the SPCB portal before 30 September.

If you don’t comply

Failure to submit the Environmental Statement by 30 September is a breach of Rule 14 of the EP Rules, 1986 punishable under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and SPCBs routinely treat it as grounds to delay or refuse consent renewal. Non-compliances the audit would have revealed — exceedances, improper hazardous waste storage, missing records — attract directions under Section 33A of the Water Act and Section 31A of the Air Act including closure and disconnection of utilities, and environmental compensation computed under CPCB's methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Is an environmental audit mandatory in India?

The annual Environmental Statement in Form V under Rule 14 of the EP Rules, 1986 is mandatory for every unit that needs consent under the Water or Air Act or authorization under the hazardous waste rules. A full third-party audit is not itself mandated by central law (some states, such as Gujarat, have scheme-based mandatory audits for certain categories), but it is the only reliable way to populate Form V accurately and to prepare for inspections.

What does Form V actually contain?

Form V reports water and raw material consumption per unit of product, pollutant concentrations and quantities discharged against standards, hazardous and solid waste generated and its disposal, pollution-control measures and investments, and planned improvements. Because it is a sworn statement to the regulator, inconsistencies with your monitoring reports and returns can be used against you.

How is this different from an ISO 14001 audit?

ISO 14001 audits check whether your environmental management system meets the standard's requirements — policy, planning, operational control, evaluation — and are carried out by certification bodies. Our environmental audit is a legal compliance and performance audit against your consents and Indian law. ISO 14001 clause 9.1.2 requires a periodic compliance evaluation, which this audit fulfils.

What happens after the audit report?

You receive a prioritised action plan with quick fixes, capital items and procedural changes. Many clients move to our compliance retainer so the actions are tracked to closure and the next year's Form V is prepared from live data rather than a scramble in September.
