Buyers, tender authorities and export markets increasingly require proof that a product is environmentally preferable, legally compliant and traceably sourced. We guide you through India's Ecomark scheme, FSC and PEFC chain-of-custody certification for paper, wood and packaging, RoHS compliance for electrical and electronic products under the E-Waste Rules and EU directives, and ISO 14025 Environmental Product Declarations built on life-cycle assessment.
Legal basis: Ecomark Rules, 2024 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986; E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 (Chapter on reduction in the use of hazardous substances) and EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for exports; FSC-STD-40-004 Chain of Custody Standard; ISO 14024, ISO 14021 and ISO 14025 for environmental labels and declarations; ISO 14040 / 14044 for life-cycle assessment
Who needs it
- Manufacturers of paper, packaging, furniture, wood products and printing companies supplying FSC-certified products to brands and exporters
- Producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment that must meet RoHS limits under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 and provide declarations of conformity
- FMCG, textile, paint, detergent and consumer-goods companies seeking the Ecomark label for Indian and government procurement
- Building material, cement, steel and chemicals manufacturers asked for EPDs by green-building projects or EU customers
- Brand owners making 'eco-friendly', 'recyclable' or 'biodegradable' claims who need to substantiate them under the CCPA greenwashing guidelines
- Exporters to markets with eco-label or traceability requirements such as the EU Deforestation Regulation and Ecodesign rules

How we get it done
- 1
Certification mapping
Week 1–2We identify which labels and declarations your customers and markets actually require, the applicable standard or criteria for each product and the gaps against current practice.
- 2
Gap closure and documentation
Week 2–8Procedures, supplier declarations, testing plans and data collection are set up — for example a chain-of-custody manual for FSC, a RoHS technical file, or an LCA model for the EPD.
- 3
Testing and assessment
Week 6–14Products are tested at accredited laboratories or the LCA is calculated and reviewed; we coordinate with the certification body or programme operator for the audit or verification.
- 4
Certification and label use
Week 14–18On successful audit or verification, the certificate, licence or published EPD is issued and we train your marketing and sales teams on correct label use and claim language.
If you don’t comply
Placing electrical and electronic equipment on the market that exceeds RoHS substance limits is a violation of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 attracting environmental compensation levied by CPCB and prosecution under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Misuse of the FSC trademark leads to certificate suspension and legal action by FSC, and unsubstantiated green claims can be penalised under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the CCPA's Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Greenwashing, 2024.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ecomark scheme and has it changed?
Ecomark is India's government eco-label, originally launched in 1991 and relaunched through the Ecomark Rules, 2024 notified by MoEFCC under the EP Act. The scheme is now administered by the CPCB with BIS, with product-specific criteria covering raw materials, manufacturing, use and disposal. Products must meet the relevant Indian Standard for quality and the Ecomark environmental criteria to use the label, which is increasingly referenced in government procurement.
What does RoHS compliance mean in India?
The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 require producers of listed electrical and electronic equipment to restrict lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE to the specified maximum concentration values (0.1 percent by weight in homogeneous materials, 0.01 percent for cadmium), maintain technical documentation and self-declare compliance on the CPCB portal; CPCB may test products in the market. Exporters to the EU must additionally meet the EU RoHS Directive, which restricts four phthalates as well.
How does FSC chain-of-custody certification work?
Chain-of-custody certification verifies that FSC-certified material is tracked from certified forests through every stage of processing and trade. Your company must implement a documented system (transfer, percentage or credit) to control inputs, outputs and claims, train staff and pass an audit by an FSC-accredited certification body. The certificate is valid for five years with annual surveillance audits, and only certified companies may sell products with FSC claims.
What is an Environmental Product Declaration?
An EPD is a third-party verified document under ISO 14025 that reports a product's life-cycle environmental impacts — global warming potential, water use, resource depletion and others — calculated according to a Product Category Rule. EPDs are increasingly requested for construction materials by LEED and IGBC projects and by European customers, and they are the credible way to substantiate a lower-carbon product claim.
